For Providers
Did you know that nearly half of all American adults — 90 million people — have difficulty understanding and using health information?
The most trusted agent in health care today is the physician. And the cornerstone of quality care is a "healthy" physician-patient relationship that helps patients become more knowledgeable about and involved in their health behaviors and medical care.
Many patients are nervous about asking questions of their health care providers. While patients say they understand, they might not fully grasp the diagnosis or treatment options.
To help your patients better understand their treatment:
- Explain the diagnosis in easy to understand terms.
- Explain the treatment options, why it's important to have treatment, and what could happen without treatment?
- Listen to their concerns and provide any guidance or additional clarifications necessary so they are comfortable with and understand the options.
